Restructuring of Kharkhari Shamshan Ghat Area
Ganga Seva Samiti, Haridwar
Site area: 4 hectare
Covered Area: 35,300 sq.ft.
Existing kharkhari shamsham ghat was an outcome of design interventions done at different times by different office bearers of Ganga Sewa Samiti without a holistic vision and proper planning. It suffered from lack of basic infrastructure like parking problem, defunct electrical incinerator, civic and public amenities like toilets, drinking water and spectators gallery, pollution of Ganga river from dead body cleansing ritual.
Realizing the need of the hour, Ganga Seva Samiti Trust took a decision to evolve a concept where in traditional rituals and environmental concerns can go hand in hand. So, we introduced a system where water was pumped from river Ganga and dead body began to be cleansed through sprinkler system and then again impure water was cleaned through filtration plant before letting it go in Ganga River.
Face lift of the whole area was done by integrating it through a common theme in different phases so that it does not hinder the daily activities of burning.
